About the Eurovision Song Contest

The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in 1956 (as the European Grand Prix) in Lugano, Switzerland. It has been held annually every year since, with the exception of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What was once a simple song contest broadcast between 7 competing nations has evolved over the 70+ years since to become a week-long spectacular. 52 countries have participated in the contest over the years (Canada makes 53!), with 28 different countries taking home the trophy.

Todays Eurovision is a televised celebration of unity, music, and creativity. Modern performances at Eurovision are technical and artistic achievements, with flashy stagings, pyrotechnics, and huge props always in the mix.

The 2026 Eurovision Song Contest was held in Vienna, Austria. The winning song was Bangaranga, by Bulgarian artist Dara.
